New manager for a day: Logan Webb, Freddie Freeman, Trea Turner discuss playing for Torey Lovullo

ARLINGTON, Texas — Only one National League All-Star has ever played a game under Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo.

That would be the Diamondbacks' lone All-Star, Ketel Marte.

In Tuesday night's MLB All-Star Game, 31 other players will get that opportunity for the first time.

San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb said that he has heard nothing but good things about Lovullo.

“Every guy I’ve talked to that’s played for him absolutely loves him," Webb said. "I do talk to [Joc Pederson] still all the time, and he loves him. Obviously, you’ve seen how he can lead a team. You see the team last year.

"I’m excited to play for him for a day, and then I’m gonna try to keep kicking his ass every time I play him after that."

Many MLB players have strong bonds with players and coaches from other teams, to be sure. But nothing quite compares to donning the same uniform for a night.

"It’s always weird seeing guys across the field, whether it’s coaches or players, and then now sharing the locker room," Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner said. "It’s gonna be a little weird.

But I’ve got a lot of respect for [Lovullo], especially after last season. They played so well. They got a lot of good players; they’re building something pretty cool over there."

As of midday Monday, Turner said that he only had a brief interaction with Lovullo.

"Just said hi to him real quick," Turner said. "Asked him why the heck I’m batting third. He laughed. It was a good time."

Of course, Lovullo is not the lone Diamondbacks coach in Arlington for All-Star week. Since the D-backs played in the World Series last year, their entire coaching staff is on duty for the All-Star Game.

Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman said that Diamondbacks first base/outfield coach Dave McKay is among his "all-time favorites."

"Just baseball knowledge," Freeman said of what stands out about McKay. "He is very good at telling them to steal and the exact moment to steal, and they seem to make it every time.

"Just someone who cares and wants to teach the game of baseball. That’s what’s so amazing to see ... There’s so many great baseball people, but Dave McKay is up there.”

Perhaps Freeman will utilize McKay's skills to nab an All-Star Game stolen base on Tuesday. (Okay, that's probably not happening.)
